Olive: Our Spirited Cairn Terrier

Olive is a two-and-a-half-year-old Cairn Terrier who came into our lives in February 2023 — a special birthday gift to Lyz. Born in December 2022, Olive was picked from photos sent by the breeder (she's on the right). Lyz had two male Cairn Terriers before, Benjamin and Louis, and after losing Louis in late 2022, Olive arrived to bring a fresh wave of joy — this time, a little lady full of personality.

From the moment she arrived, Olive’s energy and character have been impossible to miss. She’s a playful, friendly dog who loves everyone — both humans and fellow dogs. She’s happiest when she’s training (she absolutely loves learning new things), playing games, or snuffling around in blankets for hidden treats. One of her favourite pastimes is 'dew surfing': running fast and diving into the cool, wet grass in the early mornings or after rain, utterly joyful and free.

Olive’s quirks make her all the more endearing. She loves burrowing under bedclothes, lying on her back squirming with her toys, and chewing on yak cheese chews. She’s not a fan of being picked up and is terrified of the washing machine’s spin cycle — a secret only those closest to her know. Loud noises aren’t her favourite either, but who can blame her?

Life with Olive means living in the moment. She’s a daily reminder to enjoy the simple things, whether it’s a walk in the park or a quiet cuddle together on the sofa. Her big brown eyes, long eyelashes and funny, joyful nature are impossible not to love. While the early days had their challenges — like leg scrabbling and shoe attacks — patience, some expert advice, and lots of toys helped her grow out of these phases.

If you’re considering a Cairn Terrier or a dog like Olive, be prepared for a strong-willed character with a big personality. Olive’s high prey drive means she’s not suited to roaming free in open spaces near main roads, and she’s a strong pack animal who likes to keep her humans close and together when out walking. But if you want a small dog with a huge heart and endless charm, a Cairn Terrier could be the perfect companion.

Olive is part of the heart and soul behind Olive & Ted — a business born from the friendship between Lyz and her work bestie Holly, whose Golden Doodle Ted completes the pair. Olive’s style inspiration? Bandanas, not clothes — she’s a ragamuffin through and through. If she could design something for the shop, it would definitely be a bandana or a special-occasion slogan tee, because she knows how to make an impression on every walk.

In three words? Cute. Independent. Playful.
